Series on the book of Ruth

Can Good Come From the Death of a Loved One?- Ruth 2:10-14

At the time of my husband’s death, we had three grandchildren. I’d say the one hit the hardest by his death was our grandson, Thomas, who was five at the time. Before this, I had been teaching him about God, feeding him bits and pieces fit for a child that age. I taught him to pray when we ate. I answered his questions. I also prayed that God would send someone to talk to him about God during the times I wasn’t with him.

Right after Tommy (my husband) passed away, Thomas came to spend the night with me. We did our normal bedtime routine. I read him a book. We talked about random things. We said our nighttime prayers. Then I told him it was time to go to sleep.

He started crying unexpectedly. When I asked what was wrong, he told me he couldn’t go to sleep until he got saved. I asked, do you even know what that means? We hadn’t gotten that far into our talks about God. He went into telling me exactly what it means to be saved. I didn’t instruct him on how to ask God for salvation, but he prayed a heartfelt prayer that I know touched God’s ears. I was blown away.

Come to find out, he had talked to kids in his kindergarten class about losing his Papa-T and they explained salvation’s plan to him. I never imagined when I prayed that God would send someone else to talk to him about God that it would be a group of five-year-olds.

As I have written each blog post, I have reread what I wrote in my The Provision and Protection of Ruth study guide. As I read this section, I prayed God would give me the words for this blog. When this story came to mind, I first felt like this didn’t match. But I realize it matches perfectly. I’m sure Ruth never wanted to find out what it’s like to become a widow. No one would. But good did come after her husband’s death. If you fall into despair, look around you. Search and I bet you’ll find some good. Because we are human, it’s easier to see only the hurt and pain. Hang onto the good.

I wrote a study guide on the book of Ruth. You can find the link here-https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FN6B7YP1 This blog series will follow along with each section of the book. I plan to post every Monday. If you’d like a reminder, please sign up to receive notification.
