Naomi tells Ruth to go to the thrashing floor, wait for Boaz to fall asleep, then lie at his feet. It’s not as scandalous as it seems but it’s still an unusual command. Has God ever asked you to do something unusual? Something that doesn’t make sense to you?
He has me. I’ll give you one example. He told me to leave the church where I had been for 15 years. It happens. But the unusual part is, He was silent on where to go from there. I’ve always believed if you leave your church or your job, you better have another lined up to take its place.
So I prayed for three years but stayed where I was in the meantime. In other words, I was disobedient for three years. It didn’t end well for me. I left angry. I healed, but I didn’t find another church. I was finally obedient.
I can hear your protests from here. It doesn’t make sense, does it? So why did God tell me to leave the church and not find another?
My husband had gotten out of church because of “church hurt.” I’m sure you know what that is. I bet it’s the most common cause for people leaving the church. That means I’d spent those 15 years going to church alone. I don’t recommend it. You don’t fit in with married folks because your husband isn’t there and you don’t fit in with singles because you have a husband.
God didn’t leave Tommy alone, though. He’d been working on him the whole time. Tommy eventually fell on his face before God. God wanted me out of the church I was going to because he planned to restore Tommy as the spiritual leader of our family.
After Tommy’s “come back to Jesus” moment, he took us to a church I never would have picked but it was the one we both needed at that time. We both found healing there and Tommy grew his faith. We eventually moved to where I am now.
The point is, you should trust God’s guidance, even if it doesn’t make sense. He can see into the future and knows which direction you need to go in. You don’t.
I wrote a study guide on the book of Ruth. You can find the link here-https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FN6B7YP1 This blog series will follow along with each section of the book. I plan to post every Monday. If you’d like a reminder, please sign up to receive notification.
